In order to promote philanthropy, the Academy engage in the drafting of a variety of publications and materials, press articles, and posters promoting philanthropy and philanthropic organisations. We would like our publications to become practical guidebooks both for non-governmental organisations and for people wishing to support those in need. We hope that our publications shall offer help in the resolution of any legislative problems as well, and shall serve as encouragement to engage in charity work.

The Academy has published 27 publication titles in app. 18000 copies.

We have collected and filed 700 publications available in Academy?s library.

Publications receive financial support from the following institutions, among others: Charles Stewart Mott Foundation, Stefan Batory Foundation, Leopold Kronenberg Banking Foundation, Ford Foundation, Co-operation Fund. Our profound thanks to all.

Over the span of three years of our operation, 27 book titles were published in 18,000 copies. These have been drafted by the team of the Academy in co-operation with representatives of other organisations and institutions. The Academy provide their publications to non-governmental organisations, to representatives of the business sector, libraries, high schools, universities, students and volunteers.
Our readers also include partners from the Local Philanthropic Organisations? Network, who have received 1,000 copies of publications, with a further 1,000 copies delivered to local authorities..

Moreover, we are working on a set of handbook-type brochures for local communities wishing to establish a local philanthropic organisation. We shall be discussing the following topics therein:
-Tasks and responsibilities of Council, Board, and Committee members in philanthropic organisations
-Local needs analysis
-Activating local communities
-Preparations preceding the operation of local grant programmes
-Co-operating with donors (private, corporate, foundation-based)
-Proper monitoring and programme evaluation
-Operating an accounting system in a donation-accepting and grant-making organisation
-Investing endowment resources in Polish legal and tax conditions with the use of investment tools available
-Co-operating with the media when promoting the concept and work of a local philanthropic organisation
-Founding a local philanthropic organisation
-Operating a scholarship programme
We are also working on publications concerning corporate volunteerism, and on the organisation and publishing of research on charity in Poland.

Do you know that the history of philanthropy in Poland dates back to XII century? That is why the monograph summarising eight centuries of charitable and philanthropic activities has been drafted. We are convinced that this publication should be included in the library of any pro-bono organisation.
We believe that it shall provide you with many valuable examples and inspirations to work, it shall lend wigs those who continue this wonderful and valuable tradition and enlarge the group of contemporary philanthropists.

"Philanthropy in Our Times" Series


1. Capital Endowment, Filip Dopierala, ADPP, Warsaw, 1998.

The Capital Endowment offers a detailed description of Polish legal regulations concerning the options of forming community foundations in Poland. Solutions contained in the publication shall be of help to those interested in establishing community foundations when building stable endowment funds and in avoiding problems relating to the correct accounting thereof for tax purposes.

2. Doing Good without Government?s Help, Andrzej Szymkiewicz, Jan Plaskon, Anna Tabaczynska, ADPP, Warsaw, 1998.

This publication presents the chief areas of interest followed in the DemNet Project, the implementation of which has been continued by the Academy for the Development of Philanthropy since April 1998. These include support for work undertaken to the purpose of developing democracy, economy, ecology, and social welfare. Proper Order Beyond the Government Order is an attempt to show something else than simple project results, i.e. people engaged in charity work. What makes people resign from financial careers and posts with the state administration and engage in truly organic work? What makes them keep their truce with the Third Sector despite the numerous obstacles and financial and administrative problems?

3. The Donor?s Handbook, Joanna Pucek, ADPP, Warsaw, 1998.

This book was drafted on basis of the prevalent Polish legislation in the area of gifts and donations. It describes the process of making donations, containing sample statistics showing the principles applying to tax deductions to be enjoyed following a donation, as well as a sample gift agreement. This publication is to assist companies supporting non-governmental organisations? work as well as individual donors.

4. Starting and Managing Community Foundations ? on Basis of the American Experience, Kathryn A. Agard, Helen Monroe, Ed Sullivan, ADPP, Warsaw, 1998.


This is a translation of selected excerpts from an American manual entitled Community Foundation Primer. An Outline for Discussion and an Initial Organization Start-up Kit, published by the Council of Michigan Foundation (United States). This publication was prepared for persons establishing community foundations in their own communities. It is a practical handbook containing all the necessary information for community foundation founders.

5. Non Omnis Moriar. Bequests to Non-profit Organisations, Filip Dopierala, ADPP, Warsaw, 1999.

This book addresses those considering a bequest of even a part of their wealth for charitable causes, as well as individuals active in foundations and associations and thus potentially exposed to such situations. The book is a reliable study encompassing a variety of matters in the field of inheritance and accepting bequests. It contains a description of all the chief inheritance forms, sample wills, forms of drafting and executing wills, as well as information on seeking the execution of one?s bequest rights and on issues relating to procedures concerning the assumption of bequests and any legal matters related.h.

This book offers a contemporary image of philanthropy and pro bono work engaged in by businessmen in Poland; it contains interviews with individuals engaged in charitable work, both on the organisations? and the business environment sides.

9. How to Prepare a Fundraising Plan. A Handbook for Foundations and Associations, collective work, ADPP, Warsaw, 2000.


This book presents one of the methods to be applied by a pro bono organisation when drafting a plan to raise funds from different sources. The publication contains a theoretical part with a 10-step presentation of the various stages of developing such plan. The second part of the book offers practical suggestions to fundraising as described by leaders of several non-governmental organisations. Part three contains sample agreements, forms, layouts, and legal regulations potentially useful in the day-to-day work of a fundraiser
.

10. Taxes vs. Philanthropy. Selected Legal and Taxation Issues Relating to the Operation of Non-Governmental Organisations, collective work, ADPP, Warsaw, 2000.

This publication contains the most interesting quotes from a debate seminar on legal and tax solutions applicable to the operation of non-governmental organisations, organised with patronage of Mr. Longin Komołowski, Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of the Republic of Poland. Discussion conclusions apart, the publication describes fundamental legal solutions concerning the forming, operating, and funding of non-governmental organisations in three European Union countries: the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Germany. Polish solutions have been presented against their background, thus enabling the reader to compare conditions prevalent in Poland and in European Union member states.

11. Community Foundations. An Optimistic Answer to Local Problems, ADPP, Warsaw, 2000.

This (Polish- and English-language) folder presents the concept behind Community Foundations, describing the achievements and offer of the Polish Local Philanthropic Organisations? Network. Furthermore, the folder contains detailed information on the various local philanthropic organisations and on the Academy themselves.

Local Information Handbook on Mental Health Care Services for Children and Young People in the Warsaw-Centrum Gmina, Ida Derezinska, Urszula Krasnodebska, Mieczysława Mazurczak, Monika Mazurczak, ADPP, Warsaw, 1998.

This Handbook was prepared on the basis of a questionnaire study of medical centres organised towards the year-end 1998. It contains a description of approximately 300 centres offering mental health care services to children and young people. Primarily, it addresses specialists: medical doctors, psychologists, therapists, and pedagogues. The Handbook was provided free of charge to all centres who had participated in the questionnaire study as respondents. Moreover, the Handbook is available at Social Welfare Centres in every district of the Warsaw-Centrum Gmina, and at the Department of Social Welfare and Health.
