University of the Third Age in Poznan began its work in 1978. Educational courses for seniors take place nine months in a year, while trips are organized in the summer. Lectures take place weekly on Saturdays, held by academics. On weekdays, seniors can attend various classes, learning languages, the history of arts, astronomy, Chinese medicine, sports (swimming, gymnastics) etc. At present the university has over 1,000 students aged 40-90.
Polish Committee for Social Assistance - Municipal Board in Tczew decided to familiarize a group of 30 seniors with modern appliances used in everyday life. Between January and June 2002, 300 hours of meetings and courses, on theory and practice, were held. Seniors could learn how to use a mobile phone, a tape recorder, cash machine and computer. Participants overcame their reluctance to use modern appliances and learned to use the Internet as a source of information. Using computers, senior citizens prepared the publication "Senior Can Do It Too", presenting drawings, food recipes, proverbs and stories from the past.
Polish Association of Trainers KLANZA in Lublin prepared an offer for individuals working with senior citizens in the form of workshops and the book "Add Life to the Years" [Dodaæ zycia do lat]. Most of the ideas presented in the publication were taken from the theory of education through fun activities. The author, Dr. Zofia Zaorska, had experience in working with seniors in Germany and Austria, where she attended a year's course for senior-citizens trainers. The goal of the book and workshops is to stimulate the need to continue education in people who organize activities with seniors, and to present various methods that facilitate the work with a group of seniors and cross-generation groups (e.g. integration dance, graphic workshop, creativity classes).
