The Social Assistance Center in the Bielany Borough in Warsaw has run a support group for patients living with Alzheimer's disease, as well as for their families. The group began meeting in 2000. Caretakers can bring their patients twice a week in the afternoon to the center, in order to spend their time on their needs, duties or rest. In that time the patients take part in club activities and games which engage the disease-affected abilities (e.g. puzzle games, painting, singing, dancing, and percussion playing). There is a support group for caretakers, meeting one a month. 13 individuals and their families - caretakers are included in the program.
The Lublin Alzheimer Disease Association, starting in 2000, has run a day-care center for patients with Alzheimer's disease, providing 10 hours of medical and therapy care every day. Some 40 individuals use the facility. The center runs therapy exercises which improves mental and physical abilities of patients using elements of arts therapy (painting, drawing, paper and clay handcraft), music therapy (singing, listening to music, dancing, and instrument playing). The center is a permanent information place in Lublin in which the families of the diseased can find information and psychological support or use publications and advisory books on the Alzheimer's diseases.
The Kujawy-Pomorze Association of Patients with Parkinson's Disease in Inowroclaw is running a support program for individuals living with the Parkinson's disease. Apart from therapy exercises, every week patients and caretakers take part in sessions, where through conversation, games and tests patients can evaluate themselves and learn to accept the disease. There are regular meetings with specialists: psychologist, dietarian, urologist, neurologist. There are also meetings with celebrities. The Association published a guide for home exercising for Parkinson patients and the families under the title Help Yourself - Be Active Every Day.
The Day-Care Social Assistance Home in Jedrzejow decided to challenge the problem of alcohol abuse in senior citizens. In 2001, it runs a prevention program for residents and members of their families. During that time, once a week, there were meetings for people with alcohol problem (two support groups of 10 individuals each) and for those in which the alcohol problem is seen in the closest family. There were also 12 open lectures, during which specialists provided information on alcohol abuse. Behavioral patterns which amplify alcoholism were presented (co-addiction), together with alternative behaviors.
Charity Association in Kielce provides caretaker services at homes of senior citizens and the disabled (90 individuals are on the program). The organization gives access to therapy exercises, teaches caretakers, and provides them with psychological assistance. 60 homes of senior citizens and the disabled were equipped with facilities which increase their safety (handles, balustrades, bathtub thwarts, and slip-proof carpets). In order to make Kielce free of architectural barriers, the Association installed special driveways in 34 public buildings. Since 1999, the Association has run a rental of rehab, caretaker and orthopedic equipment.
